Why Hybrid work matters in Taiwan

Hybrid working is one of the major concerns for Taiwanese workers now.

Working from home (WFH) became a mainstream work style regulated by the labor authority on June 23, 2021, when Taiwan’s Ministry of Labor (MOL) announced the “Occupational Safety and Health References Guidelines on Working from Home”.

Meanwhile, hybrid working is one of the major concerns for Taiwanese workers as they will consider if the company can provide a hybrid working option when they change jobs, based on the Cisco survey.

What Taiwanese workers want

In January 2022, 104 Data invited 2,755 Taiwanese employees and 2,637 Taiwanese employers to share their thoughts on new ways of working.

The study results are illuminating: 82% of those who have worked from home think that hybrid working policies can boost employee satisfaction, while 79% agree that they can increase corporate satisfaction.

However, when it comes to working styles, employers and employees have opposing views.

Employers prefer that their employees come into the office, but employees prefer hybrid work or working from home. Both sides, however, prefer to work three days in the office and two days at home.

Hybrid working improves well-being

Cisco’s latest global hybrid work study shows that hybrid working improves five areas of well-being.

According to the research, 60% of Taiwanese employees surveyed believe that their job quality has improved due to the hybrid working model, and more than half of the employees believe that their productivity has improved.

More than two-thirds said their mental health had improved. While one-third said there had been no change, 42.8% said their social well-being had improved.

For example, for financial well-being, 81% of Taiwanese employees believe that they have saved a lot of money through the hybrid office in the past year;

They saved an average of NT$4,320 per week and NT$226,105 a year. Transportation (87%) and food and entertainment (73%) are the areas where Taiwanese employees save the most.

Reducing expenses for employees also helps to retain talent. 75% of the respondents said that when considering changing jobs, they would take the saved expenses into consideration.

It is clear that hybrid working is here to stay, and for good reason as employees and businesses alike see tangible benefits across key indicators – from improved overall employee wellbeing to better productivity and work performance.

Taiwan companies need to get prepare for hybrid working

Microsoft believes that flexible hybrid work models are here to stay. Over 70% of employees want flexible remote work options to continue, and 65% want more in-person time with their teams and collaboration in the workplace.

Although hybrid work has become a widely accepted working model among Taiwanese employees, only a quarter of employees believe that their companies are “fully prepared” for the future of hybrid offices. There are still gaps in resource policies and procedures.

104 Data study identifies key success criteria for hybrid work and work-from-home policies, including flexibility and productivity, a culture of trust, clear corporate goals, and enough efficient software and hardware.

Meanwhile, hybrid and work-from-home roles increased by 4.6 times in the last three years but only accounted for 1.5% of the recruiting market, indicating that innovative modes of working still have a long way to go in Taiwan.

What should you do for your hybrid office now?

If employers want to retain their talent, they must accommodate what employees want and make changes to incorporate a hybrid work model.

Flexibility is required as the workforce places a greater emphasis on worker well-being and better work-life balance. Whether corporations like it or not, hybrid work appears to be here to stay.
