Credit Suisse CEO Says We’ll Never Go Back to Office Full Time

  • Survey discovered that employees who choose the most flexible work options were the most productive.
  • Swiss Universal Bank employees will be able to select a work model that provides them with maximum freedom, based on their field of activity.

According to Bloomberg, Credit Suisse Group AG Chief Executive Officer Thomas Gottstein doesn’t think banks will ever return to working full-time from the office.

“It’s unrealistic and it is not what employees want,” he said in an interview at the World Economic forum in Davos on Monday, 23rd May 2022. “We are in a soft way trying to encourage people to come back, but it’s counterproductive if you push too hard.”

Credit Suisse Group AG has already planned to launch a pioneering remote work model that gives its 13,000 employees in Switzerland “maximum flexibility.”

According to a bank statement, employees will select how they would divide their time between home and the office based on their position.

By joining New Ways of Working (N-WOW!) study, between July and December 2020, Credit Suisse workers from all business sectors in Switzerland tried various work arrangements – both with and without restricted office presence. The study’s findings were largely favorable, demonstrating that being present in the workplace is not always necessary for productive work.

On the contrary, the survey discovered that workers with the most flexible work models were the happiest and want to work from home or another non-office location two-thirds of the time in the future. It was also shown that employees who choose the most flexible work options were the most productive. Furthermore, the study found that new modes of working carry with them new obstacles.

Although managers and team members can gain management skills when working from home, the study raised concerns about the possible detrimental influence of remote working on performance evaluation and career advancement.

As we prepare for a post-pandemic world, our aim is to become more flexible and agile when it comes to working arrangements.

Andre Helfenstein, Credit Suisse Switzerland CEO

Swiss Universal Bank employees will be able to select a work model that provides them with maximum freedom, based on their field of activity, and allows them to decide how and where they want to work for themselves, in collaboration with their teams and line managers.
