Amazon Stops Work on Six Office Towers Amid Hybrid Work Demand

Amazon is halting the construction of six new office buildings to rethink the designs to accommodate Hybrid Work.

By Reuters, Amazon Inc said on Friday that it is halting the construction of six new office buildings in Bellevue and Nashville to rethink the designs to accommodate Hybrid Work.

The construction halt and delay would not influence Amazon’s recruiting ambitions, according to a company representative, who reiterated the company’s pledge to generate 25,000 employees in Bellevue and another 5,000 in Nashville.

Amazon offices will become more like shared workspaces

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy earlier told CNBC (AWS CEO Andy Jassy: Offices will become more like shared workspaces after the pandemic) that in a post-pandemic future, a hybrid work environment would be the most practical solution.

“I don’t think you’ll have people coming back to the workplace 100 percent of the time like they used to,” Jassy said. “I think there’s going to be some type of hybrid model and I think it will probably differ depending on your job function.”

Employees who can work efficiently from home will continue to do so in a post-pandemic environment, but they will still make excursions to the office to work on some tasks, according to Jassy. As a result, office buildings will most likely adapt to emphasize collaboration and meeting rooms.

“My suspicion is that a lot of these office buildings will start to evolve from being optimized for individual offices or cube space to being hot offices where you decide which day you’re going to come in and then you reserve a desk,” Jassy said.

Tech companies acknowledge rejecting remote work could cost them talent

Apart from Amazon, according to securities filings, Pinterest, Intel, and PayPal all stated that they risk losing talent to competitors that provide more tempting job incentives, such as remote or hybrid work.

Other IT firms have increased their reliance on remote workers. Staff at Twitter and Square may work from home “forever,” while Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has estimated that half of the company’s employees will be working remotely within the next five to ten years. Amazon has advised employees who can work remotely that they can do so until June 2021.

How to implement your hybrid office?

A hybrid office is an arrangement in which a company’s management and employees alternate between working in a physical office and working remotely. The goal is to provide employees and employers with the best of both worlds.
