The term&nbsp;<em>quiet quitting<\/em>&nbsp;was initially coined at a&nbsp;Texas A&amp;M&nbsp;economics symposium on diminishing ambitions in Venezuela in<strong> September 2009 <\/strong>by economist Mark Boldger. The term continued to be used by other figures, including writer&nbsp;Nick Adams&nbsp;and economist&nbsp;Thomas Sowell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;<strong>Quite quitting<\/strong>\u201d means that workers are only to do the minimum work required by their supervisors, and that&#8217;s it, nothing more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The employees who are in \u201cquite quitting\u201d mode are tired of working hard on their jobs or feeling guilty about sick leave, even not going into a panic as they miss an email in the middle of the night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These employees will give <strong>more priority to life outside of work than to promotion and fame<\/strong>, and do not want to focus all of their lives on work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-16\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/paula-allen-2717206\/?originalSubdomain=ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paula Allen<\/a>, Global Leader and Senior Vice-President of Research and Total Wellbeing at LifeWorks, outlines the following as signs of quiet quitting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Saying no to tasks outside of the traditional job description<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not replying to emails or Slack messages outside of work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leaving work on time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being less emotionally invested&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No more overachieving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced interest in going above and beyond to secure a promotion at the company<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Are_People_Doing_It\"><\/span>Why Are People Doing It?&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The appearance of &#8220;quiet quitting\u201d is the worst result of companies&#8217; long time to work in traditional work models. The traditional work pattern requires the workers to have long working hours and the daily target is unclear, also supposed to work in the office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It makes the workers<strong> lose their passion for fighting for goals and the long working hours make them lose their enthusiasm for their work<\/strong>.&nbsp; This makes lots of employees join the &#8220;quiet quitting\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Quiet_Quitting_Is_All_About_Bad_Bosses\"><\/span>Quiet Quitting Is All About Bad Bosses<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the survey done by <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2022\/08\/quiet-quitting-is-about-bad-bosses-not-bad-employees?utm_campaign=hbr&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=linkedin\" rel=\"nofollow\">Harvard Business Review<\/a>, when compared to the most effective leaders, we discovered that the least effective managers have three to four times as many employees that fall into the category of &#8220;silent quitting.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only 20% of these supervisors&#8217; direct reports were willing to put in extra effort, and 14% of them discreetly resigned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, those who were assessed as being the best at juggling relationships and results had 62% of their direct reports wanting to put in more effort and only 3% were covertly quitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people have, at some point in their careers, worked for a manager who encouraged them to quietly leave their position. Feeling undervalued and underappreciated is the cause of this. It&#8217;s possible that the management exhibited bias or inappropriate behavior. The manager&#8217;s actions caused the staff to become unmotivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Traditional_work_style_damaging_your_company\"><\/span>Traditional work style damaging your company<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Maggie Perkins, a former teacher already involved in \u201cquiet quitting\u201d, said that her children will not always be three and four years old, so she would like to spend more time with her children rather than work hard on her job.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Maggie said, the worst impact of \u201cquiet quitting\u201d for a company is <strong>the reduction in productivity and efficiency<\/strong>. The reasons are <strong>the workers fully focus on their life, no more input on their jobs<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not good for Gen Z (Generation Z) in particular. Because they have the right mindset and want to succeed in the workplace. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/failure-drives-innovation-according-to-ey-survey-on-gen-z-300714436.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">70% of Gen Z<\/a> believe it is more important to be seen as having a curious and open mindset than a specific skill or expertise. Thus, they don\u2019t think \u201cquiet quitting\u201d is suitable for them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some data shows that if younger generations need to work in the office with the old work model, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swinburne.edu.au\/downloads\/Swinburne_National_Survey_Report_v3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">43% of knowledge workers would consider resigning from their jobs.<\/a>&nbsp;
